This is a huge milestone for Clone Hero, and we are very excited to share with you all the work we have been doing for the past 2 years. Make sure to read all the way to the end to discover all the features and surprises we have in store for you!

Clone Hero Leaderboards

This is what you’ve been waiting for. Clone Hero now has fully integrated, official leaderboards. This has been one of the most requested features the community has asked for, and today it’s finally here.

Two ways to play

The game now offers two distinct modes to choose from: Regular and Leaderboards. Regular mode is your traditional Clone Hero experience; local scores, no account needed, exactly as you know it. Leaderboards mode connects you to the CH Leaderboards servers, where every score you set is submitted, validated, and posted publicly for the world to see.

Regular mode menu

Leaderboards mode menu

You can switch between the two modes at any time from the main menu, by holding the blue button, kick button or White 1 on 5 fret guitar, drums or 6 fret guitar, respectively. To get started with leaderboards, simply log in with your CH Leaderboards account, and you’re off.

You must create a CH Leaderboards account to submit scores, you can do that either directly from the CH Leaderboards website, or during the login process in-game (which will open the website for you to create your account, then you can log in).

The song list

In leaderboards mode, the song list gets a whole new look. Each song now shows a condensed info panel alongside the current leaderboard for that chart, including your personal ranking and stats if you’ve submitted a score. In-menu leaderboards update live, so if someone posts a new score while you’re browsing, it shows up right away.

Leaderboards are also modifier-aware: selecting 125% speed or Brutal mode will show you the leaderboard specific to those modifiers.

In-game competition

While you play, you can see exactly where you stand. The in-game leaderboard HUD displays the top 5 scores for the chart, updates as you play, and shows your accuracy and FC status in real time. If you’re in the top 5, your name will appear right there alongside the competition, motivation to push through to the end.

Restrictions

Leaderboards mode is only available for single player. This means that you can only submit scores in Quickplay when in leaderboards mode. If you want to play Versus, co-op or Online, you must switch back to regular mode. This is because of technical limitations of our leaderboards infrastrcture and score validation systems.

Score validation and fairness

Every score submitted in leaderboards mode is verified by our servers to make sure it’s legitimate. After months of public testing through our PTB program, we’ve gotten score verification to a near-perfect accuracy rate of 99.9%. This means there is still a small and slight chance of score desync in our servers, but the vast majority of every run submitted will be correctly verified and posted without any issues. We will still be monitoring and working hard on resolving any edge case that may arise.

The leaderboards website

Alongside the game, the CH Leaderboards website lets you browse global rankings, view individual player profiles with all their submissions, check score tallies, see FC and PFC status on runs, and much more, without even launching the game. Your in-game profile and your website profile are one and the same.

Regions

The leaderboards infrastructure runs across multiple regions to give you the best experience based on your location. At launch, US and EU regions are available. This doesn’t mean that US and EU players are separated into different leaderboards, all players compete on the same global leaderboards regardless of region, but it does mean that while playing you will be connected to the server closest to you, for the fastest and most reliable experience possible.

Clean Play Bonus and Perfect FCs

Leaderboards aren’t just about who hits the most notes. V1.1 introduces new mechanics that reward truly clean play.

Clean Play Bonus

The Clean Play Bonus is a new, per-note bonus that rewards you for playing exactly what the chart asks of you and nothing more. It’s built around the new ghost meter, a bar with 3 segments that charges as you hit HOPOs and tap notes, and depletes as you perform ghost inputs (fret presses that don’t hit any note).

Depending on which segment the ghost meter is sitting in, you earn 2, 1, or 0 bonus points for each note you hit. The bonus is only awarded when you’re at a 4x multiplier or haven’t missed a note yet, so you will need to play well to earn this bonus. The ghost meter increases and decreases based on your ghost inputs on HOPOs and taps only. This means that if you ghost a certain amount during a HOPO or tap section, you will decrease the ghost meter. On the other hand, you can recover the ghost meter by hitting HOPOs and taps cleanly.

Crucially, ghost inputs will never break your combo or make it harder to hit notes, the clean bonus is purely an addition to the scoring system, not a punishment, but if that’s your thing, try the Deadly Ghosting modifier, where you will break combo if your meter goes below the first segment.

Perfect Full Combos

If the ghost meter stays in its top segment for an entire song without losing your combo, you’ve achieved a Perfect Full Combo, or PFC. This shows up as a special designation on the leaderboards and your local scores, and is a mark of exceptionally clean play.

Perfect FC (PFC) crown

To help you track your run, a new PFC ring appears on screen to let you know whether you’re currently on track for one. You’ll see the moment you lose it, so you always know where you stand. You can also sort your song list by PFC status, making it easy to see at a glance which songs still have a PFC to chase.

Squeeze Detection

The game now tracks star power squeezes, a technique where you intentionally play a note early or late in the hit window to play it while Star Power is active. The end-of-song screen now shows how many notes you squeezed, for how many points, and also tracks Squeeze Loss for when playing a note early or late results in it being played when Star Power was not active.

Dynamics Full Combos

For drums, there’s now an additional layer of challenge and reward: the Dynamics Full Combo. This is awarded for a Full Combo where you also hit all the dynamics accurately throughout the song, meaning you hit every single accent and ghost note correctly. The song must have at least 1 dynamic note for it to count as a Dynamics FC. Like the regular PFC, this is indicated on the leaderboards and has its own special crown. It should be noted that due to technical limitations in our scoring savefile system, this is only available on Leaderboards mode and not in regular mode, and will show in your submission stats in-game and on the leaderboards website only.

New instruments and controller support

Xbox One instruments, natively

Xbox One instruments are now supported natively in Clone Hero, with no third-party software like RB4InstrumentMapper required. Compatible instruments include the Madcatz RB4 Stratocaster, RB4 Jaguar and the PDP Riffmaster. Controller calibration and remapping are also available directly in the controller mapper for these instruments.

6-Fret Keys

A brand new instrument joins the lineup: 6-Fret Keys! It plays just like 6-Fret Lead, Rhythm, and Bass, with a layout and feel you’ll find familiar if you’ve played any of the other 6-fret instruments. Full leaderboards support is included from day one.

MIDI improvements

MIDI devices are now remembered between game restarts, so you won’t need to reconfigure your setup every time you launch. MIDI drums also now work even when no other controllers are plugged in.

New gameplay features

Note Color Shuffle

Note Color Shuffle randomizes the colors of the notes on the highway.

Star Power End Visualization

The game can now visually indicate when your current Star Power activation is about to end, by fading note colors as the activation winds down. This makes it much easier to see which notes fall within your activation window and spot squeeze opportunities on the fly, even on songs you’ve never played before.

Stem Attenuation

In single-player mode, on charts that provide split audio tracks, the game can now automatically lower the volume of the instrument tracks that you aren’t playing. This makes it easier to hear your own performance and adds a fun new layer to the Clone Hero experience. This is configurable through the Clone Hero’s audio settings.

Revamped Gamepad Mode

Gamepad mode has been significantly reworked. The new system supports playing notes both on button press and on button release, which makes fast strumming and mixed open/fretted sections feel much more natural, bringing it much closer to how songs play on a guitar controller with alt strumming.

Versus Mode Live Score Tracking

In versus mode, all 4 players can now see the live score difference between them and the next higher place as they play. This also lets people who turn off remote highways be able to tell how well others are doing when playing online.

Clone Hero is now on iOS!

Big news for mobile players: Clone Hero is now available on iOS for the first time ever! iPhone and iPad devices running iOS 15.6 or later are all supported. No more sideloading required, the game is available through Apple’s TestFlight app. Join the test group here and download directly from the app.

Android players aren’t left behind either, this release includes the most stable and polished mobile build we’ve ever put out, with all previously known crashing issues resolved.

Touch controls

Mobile players (both Android and iOS) now have a fully customizable in-game touch interface, allowing you to play guitar, 6-fret, drums, and navigate menus entirely without a controller. Every element of the touch layout can be repositioned and resized to suit your setup and preference.

MIDI input is also now fully supported on mobile, giving you even more options for how you want to play.

Polish and quality of life

A lot of attention has gone into making the overall experience smoother and more polished. Here are some of the highlights:

Lyrics are now generally fixed, resolving rendering bugs related to HTML and colour tags, including in practice mode.

Emoji support, thanks to a new fallback font, the game can now display emojis in lyrics and player profiles.

Texture rework, in-game textures have been improved for higher resolutions. 6-fret textures have been completely remade from scratch.

The pause menu no longer locks up until the end of the fade animation.

Button hints now appear before you open or select a profile in the main menu, making the flow clearer for new players.

A players online count is displayed when in leaderboards mode.

Song scanning is now up to 2x faster, depending on your hardware.

Chart parsing improvements fix a range of subtle bugs that previously caused issues with broken chords from older charts, micro sustains, and various drums-specific quirks.

Open chords are now supported; these are chords that combine an open note with fretted notes at the same time. They’re played by fretting the note without anchoring, and you’ll find them in charts for fingerstyle guitar and electronic music.

More surprises!

In addition to all the features mentioned above, we have been working on some secret features not present in the PTBs as a little surprise for the launch. We can finally reveal them now, so get ready.

Input Viewer

Clone Hero now has a built-in input viewer for the most dedicated players. This allows you to see a real-time visualization and count of your inputs as you play. There is a dedicated input viewer for each instrument; 5 fret guitar, drums and 6 fret guitar! It also includes a “ghost input” counter, which tracks how many ghost inputs you performed in a run for each fret, and a held duration tracker for each note.

We showed it in our V1.1 trailer, but there are more details that weren’t shown there. We know how dedicated players want to measure and track every aspect of their performance, so we have worked on an alternative input viewer mode with trails.
Simulated Frames

Simulated Frames are a new feature inspired by Andrea’s mod, a popular mod for Clone Hero. If you are familiar with Clone Hero, you may know that Clone Hero processes inputs depending on the frame rate of the game. This, historically, has made players want to play the game at extremely high frame rates, to get the most responsive experience possible, but this meant that players with less powerful hardware would get impacted.

With Simulated Frames, you can now allow the game to process your inputs at higher framerates than the ones your game is running at based on a multiplier between 1 and 8 of your current framerate. This means that if you have capped your game’s framerate at 100 FPS because that’s the best your hardware can do, and set up Simulated Frames with a multiplier of 4, the game will process your inputs as if you were playing at 400 FPS, giving you a much more responsive experience even at lower framerates. This is a game changer for players with less powerful hardware, allowing them to enjoy the most responsive experience possible without needing to invest in new hardware. If you have “Show FPS” enabled, you will now see two framerates, your actual framerate and your simulated framerate, so you can see the difference this setting is making in real time in a format like this: “100 FPS / 400 FPS” (real and simulated, respectively).

You can find this setting under Video setting with the name Simulated Frame Multiplier. This option is disabled if you have VSYNC enabled.

The Clone Hero Launcher

The Clone Hero Launcher continues to be the easiest way to manage your Clone Hero installs. With V1.1, the launcher is a first-class citizen of the Clone Hero experience:

Game Downloads, Download and manage multiple versions of Clone Hero from one place, including switching between the main release and any future PTBs.

Song Downloads, Browse and download officially released Clone Hero charts directly from the launcher. The official charting team can now release new songs independently of game updates, and you won’t need charts on disk if you don’t want them.

Leaderboards mode shortcut, Set the launcher to always launch Clone Hero directly into leaderboards mode, for a seamless login-and-play experience.

Twitch Now Live, Discover community members who are streaming Clone Hero live on Twitch, right from the launcher home page.

Settings management, Adjust in-game settings for any of your installs directly from the launcher.

Final word

Clone Hero V1.1 and the launch of CH Leaderboards mark the start of a new era for Clone Hero. This update has been two years in the making, and none of it would have been possible without every single player who participated in our PTBs, reported bugs, gave feedback on competitive mechanics, and kept the community going throughout. We want to also thank our charting team who was instrumental on getting new songs ready for this release, and all the people that has helped in our internal testing. This also marks the end of Clone Hero development, this time for good, to shift our focus on our next game, StrikeLine. Clone Hero will still receive bugfixes, especially after the launch of V1.1. After almost 10 years of development, this release marks a new era for the community, and a new beginning for our team. From the bottom of the team’s hearts, thank you.

Devlogs are concise, to-the-point posts about the general work that has been going on with Clone Hero. The last few months have all seen a PTB release post in place of a devlog, and while this is not a release post, you’ll want to stick around to see what’s coming soon…

The gist of it

The Leaderboards release is around the corner

The team has been hard at work, and we are now ironing out the last few things before release. Since the last PTB, the overwhelming majority of all desyncs on guitar submissions (both 5- and 6-fret) have been fixed, with a mere 0.02% of all submissions still having desyncs. Drums and pro drums have a bit more work left, with 1.79% and 0.55% of all submissions. As a reminder, a desync happens when the game and the server-side validation disagree on the score that a run has performed. Validation is a way to catch cheaters and to make sure that runs are legitimate.

The rest of it

As per usual, a lot of bugs from the previous PTB were fixed alongside the rest of the work. Here are some of the highlights:

lyrics are now generally fixed (addresses some rendering bugs linked to HTML and colour tags among others), including in practice mode

drums charts with dynamics can now award a Perfect Dynamics FC crown on the leaderboards, the drums’ equivalent to guitar’s Perfect FCs

the in-song leaderboards UI shows your current accuracy and FC status as you play

the pause menu no longer locks until the end of the fade

fixed a few crashes, softlocks, and generally weird behaviours when playing online

fixed some crashes during content scanning

added a Perfect FC ring! You’ll know whether you’re currently on a PFC, and when you lose it

properly implemented the “deadly ghosting” modifier, where depleting the first segment of the ghost meter makes you lose combo

MIDI devices are now remembered between game restarts

fixed a few kinks to do with the interaction between No Fail and leaderboards

Final word

That’s it for this devlog. As we carry on the final rounds of testing, there is very little that is left to do before CH Leaderboards can be released. Stay tuned for the announcement, and thanks for reading!

Welcome to the April 2026 devlog! We’ve got a lot of fixes to talk about, so let’s dive in!

As we mentioned in our first PTB blog post, our primary goal throughout the v1.1 PTBs has been to gather enough data to reproduce and fix any remaining engine bugs. Specifically, we wanted to eliminate score mismatches (also known as “desyncs”), a situation where our servers disagree with your game on what your final score should be based on the inputs you provided during a run. During our first PTB, roughly 21% of all submissions were desyncing. Today, we’re proud to report that thanks to the fixes and updates we’ve been rolling out on both the client and server side over the past few months, that number has dropped to just 0.6%! That means our engine is approaching 100% deterministic simulation under virtually every scenario you can throw at it.

With this new build, we’re aiming to reduce that number even further by fixing multiple issues we’ve noticed over the last few weeks. We expect to cut that 0.6% in half at a minimum with these fixes.

We’ve also made a lot of improvements for other parts of the game. We are further improving Xbox One instrument support by adding calibration and remapping to the controller mapper, along with fixes for online mode, the brutal modifier, and more.

Changelog

Implemented new authentication flow for leaderboards

Fixed multiple score validation desync bugs for both guitar and drums

iOS Builds

For those keeping a close eye on the development of the iOS builds, we got great news! No more sideloading is required as now the game is available through Apple’s TestFlight app, you can now join the test group through this link https://testflight.apple.com/join/XAAG82hb and download the game directly from the app.

Leaderboard score reset

As with every PTB release so far, we have to wipe the leaderboards once more to upgrade them to the new submission format. It’s safe to expect every new version to necessitate a leaderboards wipe, so don’t go grinding important scores with the expectation that they’re going to stick around while leaderboards are in Public Test Build state!

Final word

This level of engine simulation stability that we’ve reached today couldn’t have been possible without every single one of you submitting scores to the leaderboards or reporting issues on the bug channel, so as always, we’d like to thank every one of you who has made this possible!

Changelog

On guitar, most if not all “soft” desync has been synced (those not affecting score), along with most “hard” desyncs (those that do). The remaining hard desyncs should be few and far between. Let us know whether you encounter any more desyncs, as we are nearing completion on these fixes!

Drums and pro drums now have proper validation on the leaderboards. Pro drums should also include dynamics information so we can also correctly validate for accent notes.

Xbox One Instruments are now supported natively, this removes the need for RB4InstrummentMapper and similar software to use your instruments with Clone Hero. Compatible instruments are: Madcatz RB4 Stratocaster/Drums, PDP Jaguar/Drums, PDP Riffmaster!

Stem attenuation was added to the game, which is where the game lowers the volume of the audio tracks of the instruments you’re not playing. This is only available in single player mode, on charts that provide split audio tracks.

6-fret keys have been added! It is a new instrument in the vein of 6-fret lead, rhythm and bass, and behaves exactly as you’d expect.

Versus mode now has live score tracking, showing each player the score difference between them and first place, or between first place and second place.

The countdown HUD that appears during long breaks without notes has subtle pulsing effects on it.

Crashes that could happen during song scanning have been fixed.

The translation pipeline has been updated, meaning there should be less risk of seeing untranslated text in the wild.

MIDI drums now work even when no controllers are plugged in.

Some mac and android specific crashes were fixed related to library loading, and MIDI support was added.

Work was done on a new version of the leaderboards backend to use a new, more feature-full replay format.

There is now little standing between this PTB and the final release, just the remaining hard desyncs, some more gamepad validation work, some dedicated online server updates, a bit of polish, and whichever issues get reported to us from this PTB.

Note on leaderboard score resets

As with every PTB release so far, we have to wipe the leaderboards once more to upgrade them to the new submission format, especially with the new drums and pro drums support, which are mostly transparent to players but involve big changes behind the scenes. We expect this to be less necessary as time goes on, but it’s safe to expect every new version to necessitate a leaderboards wipe, so don’t go grinding important scores with the expectation that they’re going to stick around while leaderboards are in Public Test Build state!

This version is a small update that prioritizes fixing a few big bugs that have been introduced or discovered in the last PTB thanks to testing from you - the player. Let’s get into it!

Literally the entire thing (game-side)

This update has few enough things that it is pretty reasonable to post the whole changelog here. So here it is!

Replays now correctly record your Double Strum Protection and Sustain Drop Leniency settings. This should significantly reduce the number of desyncs, which as a reminder, is when the server-side validation disagrees with the game on what the player just did. Getting to a point where the server-side validation and the game fully agree on everything at all times is where we’re trying to get to!

Fixed the PFC crown doing kickflips in screenshots (tragically)

Resolved issues where the game would softlock when quitting a song after using practice mode, or when scrolling the menu while unpausing

Fixed a specific crash/exception that would occasionally occur during online play

Fixed various font issues and menu sorting bugs that appeared after the recent UI refresh

In-game submission stats now include your song-speed modifier

Added a Squeeze Loss stat for when you let a note escape the end of a starpower activation. This complements the previous PTB’s “Squeezed Notes” stat, which is when you’ve played a note early enough before the end of a starpower activation to get the multiplier bonus for it, when you wouldn’t have had you played it on time.

Fixed song scanning to correctly detect Pro Drums on Full Difficulty MIDIs

Add backend status verification to properly show error messages if failed to start a song session. In particular, if the leaderboards are full, it will tell you, and if there are no leaderboards at all for your version of the game, it will encourage you to check that you have the latest build, or try again in the future

Remove pause and popup on session disconnection due to internet or server issues and replace it with a notification popup instead. (this was previously pausing the game entirely)

Hide leaderboards in-game hud on connection failure (so you don’t think you’re in leaderboards still)

Save only the most recent replay file (saves space on disk)

Add warning on mobile platforms about leaderboards not being supported yet

The rest of the things (backend)

Following some reports of abuse from players, we’ve been hard at work on a moderation system which we are now testing out. To no one’s surprise, we want CH Leaderboards to remain a fair place for competition, so we are working hard with new tools to help with this goal.

Lastly, as with every PTB release so far, we have to wipe the leaderboards once more to upgrade them to the new submission format. We expect this to be less necessary as time goes on, but it’s safe to expect every new version to necessitate a leaderboards wipe, so don’t go grinding important scores with the expectation that they’re going to stick around while leaderboards are in Public Test Build state!

This version introduces (tentative!) changes to the clean bonus (formerly called “ghost bonus”), lots of fixes to the game, the leaderboards website, and the servers, and a whole lot of UI polish. Let’s get into it!

The new stuff

This PTB focuses on lots of game, server, and leaderboard fixes that are too long to list here (see the changelog in the PTB download announcement on the Discord for the full list). As for the big ticket items, we have:

New tentative clean bonus

We have taken into account a lot of the feedback given to us after the first PTB release to design a new and improved version of the formerly named ghost bonus, now clean bonus. Thank you all for your feedback!

The clean bonus reuses the previous PTB’s ghost meter but with 3 segments instead of 4, and is now a much smaller, more systematic bonus that gets awarded for each note you hit. The value of the bonus depends on which segment of the ghost meter is currently filled, with the top segment giving 2 points per note, the middle segment 1, and the bottom segment 0. The bonus is not affected by your multiplier nor the star power multiplier bonus, and is only given when on a 4x multiplier, or if you haven’t missed a note yet. As before, ghost inputs (extraneous inputs that aren’t required to play the notes you’re being given to play) deplete the ghost meter, and hitting HOPOs and tap notes (not strum notes!) replenish it.

This new approach fixes a problem the previous approach had, where you could enable the All Taps or All HOPOs modifiers on some charts to get massive scores that you could not reach without them. It also caps out the overall number of points that playing cleanly can afford to “number of notes in the chart * 2”. This is more in line with the number of points that very good star power activations would net you on average.

As per usual, this is a tentative change and we want your feedack! We invite everyone to engage in civil and open-minded discussion over in the PTB discussion channel of the Discord.

Ability to delete scores

Since the ghost bonus in the previous PTB has made possible scores that one can no longer beat, we thought it appropriate to add an option to delete scores. Hit the Select button (Star Power button) over any song in your song list and navigate to the Delete Score submenu.

Sort by Perfect Full Combo in song list

You can now sort your songs by whether or not you have a Perfect Full Combo on them, which as a reminder is a Full Combo of a song where your ghost meter has remained in the top segment for the entire duration of the run. In other words, a very clean run!

Squeeze detection and end-of-song screen stats

The game now keeps track of any star power squeeze you perform, which is an advanced technique where you wait until the very last fraction of a second to activate star power, so that you can then hit the very last note of the activation early while star power is still active. The game now detects and keeps track of both frontend and backend squeezes, and shows you how many notes have been squeezed, and for how many points.

Big menu UI polish

The various menus’ UI have seen lots of polish! This includes but is not limited to:

double res versions of the base UI textures

more cohesive in-game song leaderboards view and widget

better blurring against the background

lots of fixes of things that weren’t quite right in the previous PTB

Improved server stability

The leaderboards servers’ capacity has been increased to meet the demand of players. This should help alleviate the known problem where a lot of scores fail to submit to the leaderboards.

Bugfixes, memory leaks fixes, lagspikes (tentative..?) fixes

Finally, lots of outstanding problems have been caught and fixed. Specifically, the previous PTB’s problem with lagspikes and stutters has a few tentative fixes.

How to report issues

Thanks to our infrastructure, for leaderboard issues like desyncs, you don’t have to do anything to report them! We get all the information we need from the replays that are generated during a run.

If you find any additional issues with the rest of the game or servers, please report those in the PTB channel in our Discord server. We will be monitoring this channel and hope to fix anything we find as soon as possible.

Guitar Leaderboards only

This PTB still only includes leaderboards for guitar charts. Desyncs were not the focus of this PTB’s development, which is why drums and gamepad mode still do not have leaderboards support. They are now the focus of the next PTB.

Regions

This PTB still only has 2 regions available, US and EU, but their capacity have been greatly increased to meet the demand from players. This will help greatly with getting runs to actually submit successfully, which is something the previous PTB struggled to do.

Website

As per every PTB release, we are wiping the leaderboards of any submitted scores. This is because we keep experimenting with different formats for the data we handle, and these are not interchangeable. Please keep in mind that any score you set will not stay there for long! Accounts created have been kept for now, so you will not have to re-create an account every time.

How to join the PTB

The only way to join the PTB is thorugh our Discord server, which you can find here. Once in, navigate to the Public Test Build channels, where you will find the dedicated channels for PTB announcements, downloads and discussion.

Final word

That’s it for this release announcement. The next PTB will focus on rounding up the last desyncs for guitar charts. There will in all likelihood be more PTBs after this, and we are still actively working on the leaderboards website. Thank you to all players for your continued interest in the game, and see you in the next one!

The second Public Test Build for Clone Hero Leaderboards is here!
